Arizona’s Fox Grant Success Story
One of the things I love most about the Arizona Coalition for Military Families is that we are not static. We are a living, breathing coalition that is always listening, always adapting, always moving forward.
Our mission to strengthen services and support for Arizona’s 500,000+ service members, veterans, and their families hasn’t changed. What has changed, and what must keep changing, is how we do that work. Because the needs of our community do not stand still, neither can we.
Why We Must Evolve
Each year, thousands of service members in Arizona transition out of military service. Families navigate deployments, relocations, and reintegration. Veterans move through different seasons of life, sometimes with new challenges. The community’s needs shift. Economic conditions change. Health trends emerge. Behind each of these changes are real people navigating stress, transition, and uncertainty. If we are to serve well, we must be willing to evolve with those needs, holding fast to why we serve, while remaining flexible in how we serve. Data helps us see these shifts clearly, allowing us to spot gaps, recognize emerging needs, and adjust our course with intention.
The Advantage of Nimbleness
Here is where the Coalition shines. As a community-based, nonprofit, public-private partnership, we are uniquely positioned to move quickly. Large systems, such as federal or state agencies, play an essential role in serving veterans. They provide stability, resources, and reach. But they cannot always pivot as fast as needs change on the ground in the community. That’s where we come in. We bridge the gap between systems and community. We identify emerging needs and activate Coalition partners to respond. We translate system-level goals into on-the-ground action.
This nimbleness is not just a feature of our structure. It is part of our culture. We encourage innovation. We invite partners to bring forward ideas. We are not afraid to try, to learn, and to adapt. That is why government leaders and system partners increasingly see the Coalition as a tool in their toolbox, a trusted partner who can help move things forward.
Innovation in Action
Our nimbleness shows in the programs we’ve built to respond directly to community needs. These programs are more than initiatives; they represent lives touched, families supported, and communities strengthened.
- Postvention Program: Coordinated support for people, families, and communities in the aftermath of suicide, helping them and reducing the risk of further loss.
- Veteran Suicide Mortality Review: A data-informed process that examines cases of veteran suicide to identify contributing factors and strengthen prevention.
- Coaching Into Connection: Trained coaches provide personalized outreach to help people build support networks, fostering connection and resilience.
- No-Cost Training: Statewide training at no cost to equip community members and professionals with tools to connect people to resources.
Each of these initiatives reflects our nimble, innovative posture. They were developed not because they were part of a static plan, but because data, stories, and community voices told us they were needed. And because of our structure and culture, we could respond.
A Culture of Growth
At the Coalition, we embrace change. We see it as our responsibility. If we discover a better way to serve, we pursue it. If the community tells us the need has shifted, we adapt. The mission remains constant, but the form evolves. This culture of growth is what keeps us effective. It is why new partners join. It is why long-time partners stay. It is why people trust us. They know we will not simply keep doing what we have always done. We will do what is needed, when it is needed, and how it is needed.
Moving Things Forward
At the end of the day, the Coalition is about progress. We are proud to stand as an asset to our partners in government and the community alike. We are proud to be nimble, innovative, and responsive. Most of all, we are proud to move things forward for Arizona and for our nation when it comes to how we collectively build capacity and support for service members, veterans, and their families.
As I look ahead, I see a Coalition that will keep moving forward, adapting not because change is easy, but because it is necessary. Our strength comes from our ability to grow, to listen, and to act in step with our partners. Together, we will ensure that hope, connection, and support reach every service member, veteran, and their family member who has given so much in service to Arizona and our nation.
