Northern AZ – (Nov. 17, 2021) – More than a quarter of Arizona veterans and their families live in rural communities. Be Connected is partnering around the state to strengthen access to care and connection to resources for our veteran community.
Many veterans do not have access to reliable transportation and may lack the technology or budget needed to use popular rideshare services, creating a barrier for them to access grocery stores, pharmacies and seek regular healthcare to maintain their wellness. Based on a need identified by the United States Veterans Affairs, the Arizona Coalition for Military Families launched Be Connected Transportation.
The first phase of this service was launched in January 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic to bring critical food, medicine and other supplies to the front doorstep of qualifying veterans in the Show Low area at no cost, no-contact delivery.
“We are very excited to launch this service during such a challenging time when a simple trip to the grocery store or local restaurant could put some veterans at serious risk,” said Thomas Winkel, veteran and founder of the Arizona Coalition for Military Families. “Having a reliable, no contact meal delivery service is one of many ways that we are innovating to provide the necessary services to Arizona’s service members and veterans during this challenging time.”
To begin this service, the Be Connected team developed a volunteer driver program in northern Arizona with support from the NARBHA Institute and the Maricopa Association of Governments. Once the need for social and physical distancing subsides, the program will expand further to provide safe, reliable rides at no cost for Show Low area veterans. The service will help with transportation to connect veterans and family members to medical appointments, the grocery store, pharmacy, recreational activities and more. While the service operates much like popular ride shares, it will actually go one step further. The drivers will be able to offer personal assistance with any errands or stops along the way.
