Reflections from the 16th Gathering of American Indian Veterans
Recently, our team had the privilege of attending the 16th Gathering of American Indian Veterans. It was more than an event, it was a day of connection, recognition, and reaffirmed commitment to working together in the service of those who serve.
For the Arizona Coalition for Military Families, partnership is not just part of our mission or something that we focus on at events. Rather, partnering is the very foundation of who we are as people and collectively as an organization. Opportunities like this provide us the forum to stand shoulder to shoulder, learning from one another and honoring the shared responsibility we have to serve those who have given so much.
In the exhibitors’ hall, our Be Connected team spoke with dozens of veterans, family members, and community partners. Each conversation was an opportunity to listen, to share resources, and to connect people directly with our statewide support system in ways that fit their unique circumstances.
Through the Be Connected program, we are working to ensure that no veteran or family member is left navigating challenges alone. Whether it’s housing, employment, health care, or basic needs, Be Connected links people to help across all areas of life. Handing out flyers and sharing our support line was just one way we could ensure that people walked away not only with information, but with a direct path to support.
The day’s programming was rich with inspiration and leadership. Our Coalition is committed to that same spirit of agility, ensuring that statewide resources can be localized to serve the needs of each community.
Throughout the day, the Gathering offered practical and meaningful support, PACT Act toxic exposure screenings, claims assistance, VHA enrollment, and recognition ceremonies that honored the service and sacrifice of tribal veterans. These efforts reflect the very spirit of collaboration and organizational agility that we strive to uphold—by being present in communities, listening deeply, and tailoring statewide resources to meet the distinct needs of each person, family, and community.
The Warrior Honoring Ceremony, with its coin presentations and words of gratitude, was a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience carried in Native communities. It also underscored the importance of recognition, not just of military service, but of cultural identity, tradition, and the role that American Indian veterans have played, and continue to play, in our nation’s defense.
As we reflect on the day, we are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside our Native partners. The Coalition was built on the belief that we are stronger together, that real solutions come from listening, learning, and working collectively across communities. This Gathering was a testament to that truth.
We leave inspired, reminded of the road ahead, and committed to continuing this work with humility, respect, and unwavering partnership. Together, we can ensure that every service member, veteran, and family across every community in Arizona has access to the support, recognition, and opportunities they deserve.
