Everything in One Place

By mid-morning, the lines have formed. Veterans arrive early and there is a sense of purpose, but also something less tangible. A sense of welcome. A sense that this event offers answers and solutions.

At StandDown events across Arizona, that experience is consistent. Veterans often describe it in simple terms: everything is in one place, and it works. What might otherwise take weeks of appointments, referrals, and follow-up can begin to take shape in a single day. StandDowns are designed to do exactly that.

How StandDowns Help Veterans

A StandDown is a community-based event that brings together a wide range of services for veterans and their families in one location. These events typically include services such as:

Reducing Barriers

They are free to attend and often include meals and basic services that remove additional barriers to participation.

At their core, StandDowns reduce friction. Instead of asking veterans to navigate multiple systems across different locations, the system comes to them.

That matters because many of the challenges veterans face are interconnected. Housing instability, unresolved legal issues, gaps in healthcare, and employment barriers rarely exist in isolation. Addressing one issue often depends on addressing another. StandDowns create an environment where those connections can be addressed in real time.

What Can Happen in a Single Visit

Secure Identification

Replace or obtain critical documents needed to access services and benefits.

Connect to Housing

Connect with providers to explore housing options and stabilize living situations.

Address Employment

Access job opportunities, workforce support, and next-step career connections.

Find Healthcare

Receive medical, dental, and behavioral health support in one place.

Address Legal Needs

Address legal issues that may be limiting access to housing, employment, or benefits.

Social Connection

Engage with other veterans and trusted partners to build support and next steps.

The Spark of Connection

The impact of a StandDown is not limited to services alone. These events also create space for reconnection. Veterans engage with peers, share experiences, and rebuild a sense of belonging that can be difficult to maintain after transition from military service. That social dimension is not incidental. It is part of what makes these events effective.

At the same time, it is important to recognize that events alone are not the solution. A single day of services, no matter how well executed, cannot fully address long-term needs. What makes StandDowns effective is how they fit within a broader, coordinated approach.

Tailored to the Community

This is where the Be Connected Communities model becomes visible in practice. StandDowns are not one-size-fits-all events replicated identically across the state. Each one reflects the needs of the local community.

  • Rural communities may prioritize transportation, access to healthcare, and basic needs.
  • Urban communities may emphasize housing navigation, legal assistance, and employment connections.

Local partners help shape what is offered, ensuring that the event is relevant to the population it serves. This localized design is paired with coordination.

Multiple providers are aligned in one place, working toward a shared goal rather than operating in isolation. This alignment:

  • Reduces duplication
  • Strengthens referral pathways
  • Supports a “no wrong door” approach

Veterans can engage with any provider and still get connected to any of the services they need. StandDowns are held across the state, bringing resources into the community, reducing the need for travel. Just as important, they are designed to be approachable. Veterans can engage at their own pace, ask questions, and explore options without the pressure that can come with more formal systems.

One Day, Multiple Pathways

Perhaps most importantly, these events allow for real-time problem solving. Instead of receiving a list of referrals to follow up on later, veterans can take meaningful steps on the spot. In a single visit, veterans can:

  • Talk directly with providers
  • Complete paperwork
  • Access support
  • Begin resolving issues immediately

That immediacy is a critical component of improving outcomes.

Be Connected Communities In Action

StandDowns offer a clear example of what is possible when communities align around a shared purpose. They bring together access, coordination, and local insight in a way that is both practical and effective.

This is the foundation of the Be Connected Communities approach. Strong communities are not built through isolated programs or one-time events, but through sustained, coordinated collaboration grounded in shared principles. This approach draws on local expertise to address the realities of military-connected life at every stage, from entry to deployment to transition and beyond.

StandDowns make the Be Connected Communities approach visible at a local level. They show what it looks like when systems are intentionally aligned, coordination replaces fragmentation, and support is organized around the people it is intended to serve.
