Claim Predators or Claim Sharks Target Veterans
At the Arizona Coalition for Military Families (ACMF), we believe that every veteran deserves access to the benefits they’ve earned without falling prey to bad actors looking to profit from their service. Unfortunately, some organizations specifically target veterans, charging high fees for assistance that is available at no cost.
According to the VA, “claim predators” use aggressive tactics, misleading promises, and hidden fees to take advantage of veterans who are simply trying to access the benefits they rightfully deserve. Veterans facing financial stress, relationship issues, health challenges, or other difficulties may be particularly at risk.
Across Arizona, this issue is being discussed by state legislators, the bipartisan Veteran Caucus, Veteran Service Organizations, rural Native American veteran communities, and leaders within the VA. Arizona lawmakers have also taken steps to strengthen protections for veterans seeking benefits. The Arizona Legislature has introduced bills that would require anyone assisting with claims to disclose free resources and operate under clear consumer-protection rules and be VA-accredited. These efforts reinforce our statewide commitment to keeping veterans informed and safeguarded from exploitative practices.
Why Are Veterans Targeted by Claim Predators?
Scammers often target veterans because of their access to benefits, steady income, and the strong trust that exists within military communities. These bad actors exploit that trust, using deceptive tactics designed to mislead and manipulate veterans into paying for services they don’t need. Common claim predator tactics include:
- Misrepresenting their accreditation
- Promising “expedited” claim approvals
- Asking for a percentage of your future benefits
- Locking veterans into contracts they can’t easily exit
- Making false promises about increasing disability ratings
- Requiring contracts that lock you into ongoing payments
- Pretending to be VA officials and requesting personal information
- Charging fees for free services, such as obtaining military service records
Practical Safeguards
- Be Cautious with Personal Information
Scammers may pose as officials from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or other government agencies, claiming they need to “update your records.” Always verify the caller or sender before sharing sensitive information. - Beware of Unsolicited Offers
Be skeptical of offers promising faster benefit approvals, increased payouts, or exclusive deals for veterans. If they require upfront payments or personal details, it’s a red flag. - Verify Charitable Organizations
Some fraudulent charities misuse funds, providing little to no support for veterans. Before donating, research the organization to ensure your contributions go to legitimate causes. - Protect Against Phishing Attempts
Scammers use emails, texts, and phone calls to trick veterans into sharing personal data or clicking harmful links. Independently verify any message before responding. - Consult Accredited Resources
For VA claims and other assistance, rely on trusted organizations like:

Active-duty service members, National Guard personnel, veterans, and their families lost nearly 25 percent more money to scammers in 2024, with reported losses totaling $584 million, according to consumer complaints filed with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and detailed in the 2024 Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book.
