Flag Day
June 14, 2022
June 14 is Flag Day.
The official American flag was adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777 which was necessary as a result of the Declaration of Independence so the newly formed nation could unite under one flag.
Fun Facts About Our Flag
- To display the flag 24 hours a day, it must be properly illuminated. Take the flag down in inclement weather.
- The colors of the flag represent the characters of our nation and her people. Red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.
- A teenager designed our current flag. Robert G. Heft, of Lancaster, Ohio was 17 when he submitted the design in a contest in 1958. It was chosen by President Dwight Eisenhower.
- There is a body of federal law called the U.S. Flag Code that outlines the etiquette related to displaying, honoring and disposing of the American flag. Respectful burning of damaged flags according to established protocol is acceptable.
