Building Trust and Understanding

The Arizona Coalition for Military Families participated in a Tribal Veterans Symposium, engaging deeply with tribal communities to better understand and address the unique challenges faced by Native American veterans. The symposium served as a platform for open dialogue, where tribal veterans shared their experiences, concerns, and suggestions on how to build trust and improve resources. Some topics discussed included:

  • Listening and Cultural Sensitivity: The importance of genuine listening, especially when discussing culture and needs.
  • In-Person Visits and Understanding Living Conditions: The need for visits to tribal nations and communities to see and experience living conditions such as hauling water and wood. Understanding these realities firsthand is crucial for tailoring effective support.
  • Consistency and Tribal Champions: The necessity of routine contact and the need for more tribal staffers.
  • Trust and Historical Context: Recognize the deep-seated skepticism towards governmental systems, influenced by historical injustices. There must be an acknowledgment of the missing indigenous people. Empower tribes to figure out their own solutions.
  • Interpersonal Trust: While trust in systems might be challenging, trust between individuals can be nurtured.
  • Advocacy and Focus on Missing Indigenous People: There is a need for greater advocacy and focus on missing Indigenous people.
  • Addressing Basic Needs: Securing housing and establishing clinics in rural areas to reduce long commutes and make healthcare more accessible.

The Tribal Veterans Symposium underscored the importance of trust, understanding, and collaboration between tribal communities and organizations. By listening, engaging, and committing to long-term support, we can better serve our Native American veterans and honor their invaluable contributions.
