U.S. Withdraws from Afghanistan
August 30, 2026
The United States completed its troop withdrawal from Afghanistan on August 30, 2021, ending nearly two decades of military involvement. This process began with the February 2020 U.S.–Taliban agreement, which stipulated the withdrawal of all NATO forces by May 1, 2021. The Biden administration extended this deadline to September 11, 2021, later moving it up to August 31. As U.S. forces withdrew, the Taliban launched a nationwide offensive, capturing Kabul on August 15, 2021, leading to the collapse of the Afghan government. The final phase of the withdrawal involved a massive airlift, evacuating over 120,000 people, including U.S. citizens and Afghan allies. The withdrawal marked the end of America’s longest war but drew criticism over its execution and the rapid resurgence of the Taliban.
