National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day is observed on April 9 each year to honor and recognize the sacrifices and courage of Prisoners of War (POWs) and their families. This day commemorates the brave men and women who have endured the hardships and atrocities of being held captive during times of conflict. It also acknowledges the sacrifices and strength of the families who have supported and waited for their loved ones to return home. On National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day, Americans are encouraged to fly the POW/MIA flag and participate in ceremonies and events to honor and remember these veterans. It is also a reminder to support and care for those who have returned home as well as those who are still missing in action or held as prisoners of war.
