First U.S. Combat Troops Arrive in Vietnam
March 8, 2026
The arrival of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade on March 8, 1965 under the direct order of President Johnson marked the first deployment of a major U.S. ground combat unit to Vietnam. It was a step in the U.S. transition from an advisory role to direct participation in the war.
