Battle of Basra 2003
March 21, 2028
The Battle of Basra was a key early battle in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, lasting from March 21 to April 6, 2003. The battle was part of the U.S.-led coalition’s campaign to secure Basra and its strategic seaport, Umm Qasr. The coalition’s goal was to reduce the risk to civilians by drawing Iraqi forces out of the city. The battle damaged Basra’s infrastructure, including its water system. The Iraqi Security Forces were able to reclaim control of the city from Shi’a militias.
