SUMMARY:Suicide Prevention Month
DESCRIPTION:September is Suicide Prevention Month\nSeptember is National Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide is a public health issue and suicide prevention is a way to contribute to the overall health of our families\, communities\, and nation. We all have an essential role to play when it comes to suicide prevention. \nThe Be Connected support line is available to provide resource navigation and support at no cost to all Arizona service members (Active Duty\, Guard & Reserves)\, veterans as well as their family members and caregivers. Be Connected’s support line services are offered at no cost and all calls are confidential. For crisis services\, call 9-8-8 and press 1 or text to 838255. \nHere are some constructive ways you can contribute to suicide prevention efforts and increase the health of the community: \n\nTake in facts about suicide. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVeterans are at a higher risk for suicide.\nVeterans have an adjusted suicide rate that is 52.3% greater than the non-veteran US adult population. Source: SAMHSA\nPeople who have previously served in the military account for about 13.7% of suicides among adults in the United States. Source: VA\nIn 2019\, 1.6% of former active-duty service members aged 18-25 years reported making a suicide attempt during the previous 12 months. This was an increase from 0.9% in 2009. Source: SAMHSA\n\n\nAct with compassion. Seek to understand\, and avoid making assumptions and judgments.\nLearn to recognize concerning behaviors and signs of suicide.\n\n\n\n\nKnow what to do and how to seek assistance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall 9-1-1 if the situation is actively dangerous \nCall 9-8-8 for crisis support 24/7\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStart a conversation and stay calm if someone you know exhibits concerning signs.\n\n\n\n\nAsk if the person is thinking about suicide.\nBe there. Don’t leave the person alone. \nConnect them to resources such as 9-8-8 or take them to the Emergency Room\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Navajo Code Talkers Day
DESCRIPTION:August 14 – Navajo Code Talkers Day: An official state holiday in Arizona \nGovernor Ducey on March 29 signed legislation sponsored by Senator Jamescita Peshlakai that makes National Navajo Code Talkers Day a legal state holiday every year on August 14. Under the legislation\, if National Navajo Code Talkers Day falls on a day other than Sunday\, the Sunday following August 14 is to be observed as the holiday. \nEach year on August 14\, the nation remembers and recognizes the unique contributions the Navajo Code Talkers made to U.S. history during World War II.  The United States government recruited and enlisted more than 400 Navajo men to serve in standard communications units. The Navajo Code Talkers used their unbreakable code to assist in every major operation involving the United States Marines in the Pacific theatre\, including during the battle of Iwo Jima where they successfully transmitted more than 800 messages without error. \nNavajo Code Talkers Day was established through a presidential proclamation by President Ronald Reagan on August 14\, 1982. In 2014\, Arizona passed legislation declaring every August 14 Navajo Code Talkers Day in Arizona. View the 2021 Navajo Code Talkers Day proclamation HERE. \nAhéheeʼ means “thank you” in Navajo.

SUMMARY:Purple Heart Day
DESCRIPTION:Purple Heart Day – August 7\nThis day was created for Americans to remember and honor the nation’s brave men and women who sustained injuries or were killed while serving and were awarded the Purple Heart. Originally called the “Badge of Merit”\, the medal was first awarded by George Washington in 1782. The award was renewed in 1944 to specifically honor those who have been wounded or died in service to the country through the armed forces. \n\nThere have been more than 1.8 million Purple Hearts awarded.\n\nTo honor this day\, reflect on the bravery demonstrated by U.S. service members and veterans. Recognize the courage displayed by so many in the face of danger\, the valor of the injured and the heroism in making the ultimate sacrifice for America. \nPhoto courtesy of DVIDS.

Heft\, of Lancaster\, Ohio was 17 when he submitted the design in a contest in 1958. It was chosen by President Dwight Eisenhower.\nThere is a body of federal law called the U.S. Flag Code that outlines the etiquette related to displaying\, honoring and disposing of the American flag.
