SUMMARY:Suicide Prevention Month
DESCRIPTION:September is Suicide Prevention Month\nSeptember is National Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide is a public health issue and suicide prevention is a way to contribute to the overall health of our families\, communities\, and nation. We all have an essential role to play when it comes to suicide prevention. \nThe Be Connected support line is available to provide resource navigation and support at no cost to all Arizona service members (Active Duty\, Guard & Reserves)\, veterans as well as their family members and caregivers. Be Connected’s support line services are offered at no cost and all calls are confidential. For crisis services\, call 9-8-8 and press 1 or text to 838255. \nHere are some constructive ways you can contribute to suicide prevention efforts and increase the health of the community: \n\nTake in facts about suicide. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVeterans are at a higher risk for suicide.\nVeterans have an adjusted suicide rate that is 52.3% greater than the non-veteran US adult population. Source: SAMHSA\nPeople who have previously served in the military account for about 13.7% of suicides among adults in the United States. Source: VA\nIn 2019\, 1.6% of former active-duty service members aged 18-25 years reported making a suicide attempt during the previous 12 months. This was an increase from 0.9% in 2009. Source: SAMHSA\n\n\nAct with compassion. Seek to understand\, and avoid making assumptions and judgments.\nLearn to recognize concerning behaviors and signs of suicide.\n\n\n\n\nKnow what to do and how to seek assistance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCall 9-1-1 if the situation is actively dangerous \nCall 9-8-8 for crisis support 24/7\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStart a conversation and stay calm if someone you know exhibits concerning signs.\n\n\n\n\nAsk if the person is thinking about suicide.\nBe there. Don’t leave the person alone. \nConnect them to resources such as 9-8-8 or take them to the Emergency Room\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:National Service Dog Month
DESCRIPTION:September is National Service Dog Month \nNational Service Dog month is an opportunity to recognize the animals that have been specially trained to provide support for people in need who may be living with medical issues\, impaired mobility\, or addressing mental health needs. Although it has become popular for animals to offer emotional support\, it is important to note that service animals are specially and professionally trained and are afforded special legal protections to be present with their human in places that typically would not allow animals or pets. National Service Dog month has been officially observed in Arizona by proclamation of the Governor and was first observed in 2008 through the efforts of actor Dick Van Patten.  \nRead this blog to learn how the Be Connected team worked to help service dogs belonging to veteran athletes and veterans experiencing homelessness. \nPhoto Courtesy of the Department of Defense (DVIDS): Capt. Carmella Burruss\, 22nd Operations Support Squadron deputy chief of wing intelligence\, poses for a photo with Valco\, May 25\, 2016\, at McConnell Air Force Base\, Kan. Valco is a Labrador-Poodle mix who has been training with Burruss to get his certification from Therapy Dog International so he can work in Veterans Affairs hospitals. SUMMARY:Veterans Day 2022
DESCRIPTION:Veterans Day began back in 1919 under President Woodrow Wilson. Veterans Day was originally named Armistice Day and was designated November 11 because of the significance of the end of World War I when the fighting stopped at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the month in 1918. \nIn 1954\, Congress officially changed the name of the federal holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day as a way to recognize veterans who fought in all wars. Today we observe Veterans Day across America in a variety of ways. Many communities host parades in honor of veterans. Moments of silence\, artwork\, and even discounts are some additional ways that Americans pay tribute to all who have served in the nation’s military. \nSince both observances honor the nation’s military members\, some people confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day. Veterans Day is our opportunity to thank all service members and veterans for their service in the United States military\, whether in peacetime\, during conflicts\, or wartime. \nMemorial Day is a day set aside to recognize and remember the members of the United States military who lost their lives in service to our country\, with a special emphasis on those who died in battle or as a result of injuries from a battle. \nThe Arizona Coalition for Military Families and the Be Connected team\, many of whom are veterans themselves and members of military families\, wish to extend our sincere appreciation for all who are serving\, all who have served\, and everyone in their families who make their decision to serve in the military possible by making sacrifices so we\, as Americans\, can benefit from their selfless service.
