DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Midway\, fought from June 4 to June 7\, 1942\, was a decisive American victory in World War II and a turning point in the Pacific Theater. Located north of Midway Atoll\, the battle pitted U.S. forces led by Admirals Chester W. Nimitz\, Frank J. Fletcher\, and Raymond A. Spruance against Japanese forces commanded by Admirals Isoroku Yamamoto\, Chūichi Nagumo\, and Nobutake Kondō. The U.S. Navy\, using dive bombers from the carriers Yorktown and Enterprise\, destroyed four Japanese aircraft carriers—Hiryu\, Soryu\, Akagi\, and Kaga—while losing only the Yorktown. This victory shifted the military initiative to the United States\, crippling Japan’s ability to launch large-scale offensives.
